Mohawk Family Services

”Nurture Support Protect” is Mohawk Family Services (MFS) Mission Statement. MFS is a prevention program to protect our children; provide support necessary to keep families together; nurture and instill the traditional values of Mohawk People to protect the sacredness of the child and family.

 

Functions & Activities

Mohawk Family Services is staffed by 7 full time staff that provides assistance for children and families in a variety of ways that includes:

  • one to one and family counseling
  • parenting training and behavior management
  • Foster Care/Customary Care
  • home visits and supervised access visits
  • advocates/refer on behalf of the client’s needs
  • capacity building
  • referral to programs/ services both on and off Territory.
  • assisting in protection investigations

 

MFS has an after hour’s 24-hour service/pager support.

 

Services

Protection & Placement

Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte/Mohawk Family Services have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hastings Children’s Aid (HCAS).  Due to the changes in the Child and Family Services Act , MFS protection service has dramatically increased and now along with HCAS  play a major role in:

  • Court issued supervision orders
  • assisting in protection investigations
  • placement of children of MBQ members.

 

Early Intervention Prevention

Mohawk Family Services (MFS) is a prevention program involving early intervention to reduce the need of protection (as defined in the Child and Family Services Act) but are children and families who are in need of assistance/support. This is provided through a variety of ways including:

  • one to one and family counselling
  • training (e.g. parenting, behaviour management)
  • Foster Care/Customary Care
  • home visits and supervised access visits
  • advocate/refer on behalf of the client’s needs
  • capacity building
  • accessibility to programs/services both on and off Territory.
